Your First Visit

Your first osteopathic appointment

On your first visit, you will be asked about your current problem and its history ie when and how did it start. You will also be asked about your general medical history, as it may be relevant to both diagnosis and treatment.  The osteopath will usually examine the affected area, and take note of any more general postural problems.  Sometimes, the examination may require removal of outer layers of clothing, so it is advisable to wear underwear in which you feel comfortable. You are welcome to bring a friend or partner.
The findings and diagnosis will then be discussed along with the proposed treatment and aims. Rarely, treatment may not be advisable, eg a bleeding wound, fracture, or a medical emergency.  In such cases, appropriate advice or referral will be offered.

Treatment is generally designed to reduce inflammation, pain and muscle spasm, and to increase or restore function, using soft tissue massage, and joint articulation techniques as required.  Often this also involves advice on simple exercises or stretches to help you prevent recurrence.

Some conditions may require further osteopathic treatment.
